Second Week of Advent
God of hope, in this Advent season we cry “O come, O come, Emmanuel!” Like John we call out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight!” Help us, O God, to prepare the way in our minds and hearts to truly welcome the peace of Christ as we welcome the Christ child into our world.
From the Prayer Calendar, we pray for Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and for missionaries Jonathan McCurley and Sonia Vargas-Maldonado.

The time is drawing near for us to decide if and how many are planning to go to the UMW retreat at McCormick Creek State Park.  I've attached the registration for your information.   I have heard from Ruth Ann Deal and she is interested in going.   So right now we have a pair.   We could have a party if we can find 4 more women... our car holds 6 just fine.

We need to reservations in by Sunday, December 14.   Let me know if you are interested in going.

Blessings,
Bonnie Albert

Your Circle leader have the registration forms, they can also be found in the UMW mailbox.

December
****************************************
Today begins Advent, O God, and we call on You to open our hearts to this first Sunday of the season … a season not of Hallmark cards and department store sales, of red and white clad Santas and greenery hung in every space, of holiday parties and shimmering lights, but a season of reminder that the church year began with a teenage girl, donkey travel, barn lodging and a helpless baby.
May our minds see all that is around us draped in the context of materialism while our souls translate it into that which is immeasurably valuable, like joy and love and peace. On this day we pray for children. We pray for those long awaited and those suddenly blessing us. We pray for those who are loved and wanted and for those who are met with anxiety. Forgive us that we sometimes abstain from the hard work required to make this world a better place for all children. Forgive us for being caught up in our own selfish pursuits and not noticing that needs exist around us even if they are not the reality in our own home. Forgive us if we do not seek to do all we can to care for the children in our family, the children of our community, the children of our nation, the children of our world … because they all belong to us and we to them.

From the Prayer Calendar:
We pray for Bethlehem Center in Spartanburg, S.C., Lester Domon, Elaine La Van, Tisha E. Turnbull, Scott Vickery and Tylie S. Waters.

Giving Tuesday
December 2
Greetings UMW "stars",
This coming Tuesday we have a unique opportunity to support a ministry that is special for those who follow the Margie's activities at Latin American Bible University.   This is where Margie has given her heart for the past 3 years...working with faithful church leaders from around Latin America who are seeking to bring others to Christ when they are finished with their studies.   One of the General Church Advance projects is Student Scholarships at UBL.

On Giving Tuesday, we can give any amount we would like and if we do it shortly after 11:00 p.m. we have a chance to have our donation doubled.   It is an online giving opportunity and we can give any amount and give credit to our church.   It's real easy.  (I got so excited last year I made 12 donations to various ministries...way too easy!)    So check out the blog   http://valpofumcomissions.blogspot.com/   and on Tuesday, December 2, make donation for scholarships for UBL students.   This would thrill our Miss Margie who arrives home on December 3 for a few days, then off for the rest of the month with her girls.   She'll be back on January 5,  leave again in less than 2 weeks to go to Sager Brown and return in time to get back on the plane to return to Costa Rica in early February.

Have some fun with this one.   If you have questions as to how to do this, don't hesitate to call or shoot me an email.

Blessings,    Bonnie Albert

Christmas Open House
Christmas decorations were plentiful at the Shop today; plentiful enough to result in over $1100 worth of sales! What magical chaos and fun it was!

Picture this:
1. People waiting to get in so we opened the doors at 8:45.
2. Room temperature in the building was a balmy 80 degrees.
3.  Two cash registers being run by Barb Ranger, Karen Fritz, Barb Blake and Phyllis Gerber.
4.  Stockers, also known as "runners", constantly refilling any nook and cranny or empty space that opened up on the shelves. These "runners" (with the achy backs, feet and legs) who also provided carryout service in their spare time were:  Mary Alice Koehler, Darlene Myers, Deb Wuebbling and Marlene Versteeg. Special thanks to these elves who went over and beyond the call of duty today. Without them, none of this day's success would be possible. I may have to give them a raise!

Also, thanks to the many Shop volunteers who showed up to look around, buy a little, and shake your heads in amazement because it truly was an amazing day. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Don't worry if you missed this event there are plenty of items available.

Boiler Down!!  Things have changed for the Raines Residence boiler!  It literally fell apart when they tried working on it to do the repairs.  Needless to say, we do not have any choice but to install a new boiler.  Details will follow about a special project to help fund this replacement.  In the mean while ... Checks should be designated "boiler or as needed" in the memo line and sent to the Residence.  Keep this project in your prayers.

Christmas Open House November 7th

Here is an email from Kathi about the shop:

For the 2nd time in our Resale Shop history, we realized monthly sales exceeding $5000. Thanks to all of our volunteers who made this happen.
A year ago in October 2013, monthly sales were $5627, of which $1235 was a direct result of jewelry/collectible sales.
This year, our October sales were $5356, of which $850 was from the jewelry/collectible sale.
So far, year-to-date sales are 3.3% ahead of last year. We have been spoiled the last 4 years with double digit growth percentages, but realistically, a 3.3% growth is better than no growth at all; at least that’s what I tell myself.
Yesterday, the dynamic duo of Marian Worden and Ruth Ann Deal got November off to a bang with $200 in sales. I believe they should work every Saturday, but they do not seem to agree with me. Go figure!
Remember that this Friday, Nov. 7th, is the Shop’s Christmas Open House. This is my personal favorite of all our special sales. I hope to see you all there and spread the word to your friends and family too.
Blessings, Kathi Thompson

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Breast cancer awareness must be about more that buying yogurt in pink containers:  it's fighting for access to screenings and treatment, it's understanding not just its genetic causes but the connections between environmental factors and breast cancer, knowing how breast cancer disproportionately  effects different communities.

National midterm elections will be held Nov. 4, 2014.  Thirty-six U.S. Senate seats and all 435 House of Representative seats are up for  election.  Thirty-six state governor seats are also up for election, as well as many other state executive and legislative positions.
The mail-in registrations deadline for most states is October Currently, only 13 states ( not Indiana) allow same-day, in person registration, so be sure to register today!
If you believe you are already registered, it's good to make sure.  Nonpartisan, nonprofit websites like HeadCount.org and RocktheVote.org are easy ways to not only check you registration status but to register for the first time and learn of any new voting requirements your state may have implemented since you last voted.  The U.S. Election Assistance Commission at www.eac.gov can help you learn your state's requirements.
If you are prevented from voting for any reason, call 1-866-OUR-Vote, the nonpartisan Election Protection Hotline run by the Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights.  You have a right to choose who gets to make laws and spend the country's money.  Don't Forget that absentee voting is available as well.
For help determining which candidate shares you values, download the 2014 candidate checklist at www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/news/midterm-election-guide . And vote.
